Please consider the
portfolio as a product similar to a book report, in that, you will create a
notebook that has, for example, sections on plot, theme, character and
style. Poetry portfolios will consider
elements relevant to its genre.
The portfolio differs from
the essay and the research paper due to your use of multiple mediums to
communicate the author’s accomplishments in plot, character, et cetera. These include relevant materials such as graphics,
song lyrics and music, your own poetry, and whole articles (no more than 3
pages of criticism per CD) of researched criticism. The portfolio does not have to defend a thesis, but it must have
˝ page of CM following each CD, explaining why you chose the CD. Use no more than 1.5 line spacing for the CM
pages. You will probably match creative
elements with passages from the literature.
Colors, shapes, font styles, paper stock, and other appropriate and
relevant artistic considerations should produce a notebook that is pleasing to
the eye and substantial in content.
Poetry portfolios will heavily emphasize the poet’s style, focusing on
conventional poetic elements.
The portfolio must contain
the following elements in order to receive a “C”:
A three-ring, hard binder with cover art.
A minimum of 40 pages (no more than 60 pages, please)
On-page documentation of every CD
All text is typed, computer printed or artistically
rendered; do not use a font size of larger than 12
A table of contents that corresponds with all the
numbered pages of the portfolio
Section title pages; you may have sub-section title
pages, but do not assign page numbers to these pages; section elements, such as
specific plot events, characters, themes and stylistic elements must be clearly
identified
A Works Cited page with a minimum of three citations
Your two-page evaluation of the primary text(s)
(Place immediately before the Works Cited page)
Required sections of plot, characters, themes, and
author’s style must each have at least one example from each of the four
categories of CDs. The four categories
are primary text, secondary text, pictures/illustrations and creative. The creative category includes poetry, song
lyrics and 3-d objects. Refer to the
portfolios in the #2 cabinet for examples of these CDs
Each required section must conform to the “no more
than gap of one” rule. I have orally
covered this rule in the group meeting, but if you were not present or do not
recall the specifics, please meet with me at lunch for an explanation
I assign “A” and “B” grades
based on the level of quality of the aforementioned elements
The portfolio is worth two
hundred points.
