Researched Persuasive Speech

Each student is required to thoroughly research a topic that reflects a controversial issue.  The research will allow the student to create a speech based on the topic.  The speech is worth 100 points.

The student must complete the following requirements for the speech:

1.     Create source cards for at least five (5) separate articles, chapters, web pages, et cetera.

2.     Create note cards for direct quotations and paraphrases taken from the articles, with each source and its respective cards coded by color, distinguishing it from the other sources and cards.  For example, source #1 bibliography card is coded red; all related notes will have red on the cards.

3.     Create a speech that states the issue in the form of a question, beginning with the word ‘Should,’ then state your answer to the question (your position), and then alternate between facts and opinions that support the position.  Also, acknowledge positions that challenge your argument, but subsequently refute them, making your position stronger.  All five sources must be used in the speech.

4.  Create a speech that lasts from 3-5 minutes.

5.  Use note cards, not paper, from which you may refer during the speech.

6.  Use good speaking skills, including posture, vocal volume and inflection, eye contact, energy, and confidence.

7.  At least one visual aid must be effectively used in the speech.  If tested in advance, you may use PowerPoint for this.  You must show the visual aid to me for approval if its content may be too shocking or uncomfortable for students to view.
