Arrive in London

“Sound drums and trumpets and to London all”—(Shakespeare, King Henry VI part II). Ranging from the

North Sea in the east to the playing fields of Eton in the west, London covers an area of some 620 square

miles and is home to over 8 million people. Prepare to observe the stunning architecture, vibrant street

life and royal majesty of this bustling metropolis.

Overnight in London     Dinner is included tonight.

Day 3 Monday, August 1, 2011

Guided sightseeing of London

A local guide leads you on a panoramic tour of London. Begin in Grosvenor Square; site of the U.S.

embassy and the house where Eisenhower once lived, this area is sometimes called “Little

America.” Continue to Hyde Park Corner, located at the southeast corner of Hyde Park, one of London’s

largest parks. At bustling Piccadilly Circus, the intersection of five busy streets, check out the bright

lights and big city displays, before heading to Trafalgar Square, site of Nelson’s Column, built to

commemorate his 1805 victory in the Battle of Trafalgar. Pass Speaker’s Corner, where anyone with

something to say is invited to speak his mind. Snap a photo of the Houses of Parliament and continue

along London’s South Bank for views of the famous Tower of London and London Bridge. Stroll across

the Millennium Bridge for an orientation of St. Paul’s Cathedral, the magnificent 17th-century Baroque

church designed by Sir Christopher Wren. Finally, witness a London tradition-the Changing of the Guard.

Free time in London

Spend the latter part of the day enjoying all that London has to offer. You may want to see world famous

works at the Tate Gallery or the National Gallery on Trafalgar Square; explore the darker side of

London’s past at the London Dungeon; discover the city’s rich history at the Museum of London; or walk

through some of her famous green spaces.

Overnight in London

Day 4 Tuesday, August 2, 2011

Excursion to Canterbury

Travel into the ‘garden of England.’ Canterbury has played a pivotal role in the religious history of

Britain. Inside Canterbury cathedral you will learn of Thomas à Beckett’s bloody fate, see the garbs of

Edward Plantagenate (the Black Prince) as well as the tomb of Henry IV.

Visit to the Canterbury Tales Museum

Journey back in time to 14th-century Canterbury at this popular England attraction. Experience the

pilgrimage of Chaucer’s famous characters as you listen to the Knight, the Miller, the Wife of Bath, the

Pardoner and the Nun’s Priest tell their tales. Wind your way through the medieval streets, beginning at

London’s Tabard Inn and ending at the breathtaking reconstruction of the shrine of Thomas a Becket.

Visit to Leeds Castle

Continuing inland towards the North Downs, you will visit Leeds Castle, which sits opulently on both an

island on the lake as well as the mainland.

Overnight in London    Dinner is included tonight.

Days 5-7 Wednesday, August 3 to Friday, August 5, 2011

Free days in London

Enjoy three free days in London. You might wish to visit the original Hard Rock Café or Madame Tussaud’s

Chamber of Horrors, take a cruise down the Thames, or browse through the countless stores along

Oxford Street. Attend a Shakespearean drama at a replica of the Globe Theatre, or visit the fascinating,

hands-on exhibits of London’s Natural History Museum.

Overnight in London    Dinner is included on day 7.

Day 8 Saturday, August 6, 2011

Guided visit to the Tower of London

The history of London comes to life at this complex of 20 towers surrounding Tower Green. The oldest

tower, known as the White Tower, was completed in 1097, when it was the tallest building in London. The

Tower buildings have had many uses over the years; perhaps the most infamous was as a jail for political

prisoners, not to mention two of Henry VIII’s wives. The most famous exhibits at the Tower are the British

Crown Jewels. Aside from a short interruption during WWII, these splendid baubles have been locked

behind the Tower’s walls for centuries.

Excursion to Buckingham Palace

Built originally as a country home, Buckingham Palace did not become the official residence until Queen

Victoria decided to live there, as she preferred it over St. James’ Palace. The palace is located in a 40-acre

garden and has 600 rooms! (Buckingham Palace is only open for tours when the Queen is not in residence

during the summer months, and therefore, entrance cannot be guaranteed by EF.)

Overnight in London    Dinner is included tonight.

Day 9 Sunday, August 7, 2011

“Chunnel” crossing via the Eurostar

In London, board the high-speed Eurostar, a quarter-mile-long train that connects Britain with

continental Europe for the first time since the Ice Age. The journey from London to Paris will take three

hours, 16 minutes of which are spent under the English Channel as you pass through the world’s longest

tunnel at a top speed of almost 200 miles per hour.

Guided sightseeing of Paris

Discover the city on the Seine during your bus tour. Learn about Paris’ origins as a Roman settlement as

you pass through the Île de la Cité, where you will also see Notre Dame Cathedral. Pass by the imposing

Arc de Triomphe, commemorating Napoleon’s Grande Armée, and the École Militaire, where he

graduated to Lieutenant. Continue down the elegant Champs-Elysées to the Place de la Concorde,

dedicated to King Louis XV and the site where Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were executed during the

French Revolution. Then, head through the Quartier Latin where you will see the world-renowned

Sorbonne University, and drive along the Seine for wonderful views of the Musée D’Orsay, the Louvre and

the Pont de Neuf, or ‘new bridge’, which is ironically Paris’ oldest. Finally, make a photo stop at the

iconic Eiffel Tower, built for the 1889 World’s Fair. Learn why this impressive, yet controversial, symbol

of Paris was spared the wrecking ball in 1909.

Visit to the Notre Dame Cathedral

Victor Hugo once described the sculptured façade of Notre Dame as “a vast symphony in stone.” However,

had it not been for the creation of his famous hunchback, Quasimodo, the cathedral might never have

returned to her former glory. Hugo’s novel, The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1831), helped inspire a 23-year

restoration of the cathedral that began in 1841. Step inside to admire her stained-glass rose windows and

seemingly weightless vaulted ceilings. Built between 1163-1361 over the remains of an ancient Roman

temple, it was here that Napoleon crowned himself emperor in 1804.

Overnight in Paris    Dinner is included tonight.

Days 10-11 Monday, August 8, Tuesday, August 9, 2011

Free days in Paris

Enjoy two free days for your own explorations of Paris. You might wish to visit the Musée d’Orsay, the

Rodin Museum, or the futuristic exhibits of the Pompidou Centre. Other possibilities are a visit to the

Sacré-Coeur, where you can watch artists at work in the streets of Montmartre below, or a stroll

through the Latin Quarter. Or take part in the timeless Parisian tradition of people-watching over a cup

of café au lait at a sidewalk café.

Overnight in Paris

Day 12 Wednesday, August 10, 2011

Excursion to Chartres Cathedral

Dominating the skyline of this town is the 13th-century cathedral, one of the most amazing achievements

in Western architecture. With its two towers, one Gothic the other Romanesque, this is a truly unique

experience. Take time to enjoy the picturesque gardens that surround the cathedral.

Overnight in Paris    Dinner is included tonight.

Day 13 Thursday, August 11, 2011

Free day in Paris

Today spend another day exploring the fascinating city of Paris. You might wish to view Monet’s Water

Lilies at the Musée de l’Orangerie, or visit the Panthéon, final resting place of Voltaire and Rousseau.

Similarly, a trip to the cemetery of Pere Lachaise will allow you to see the tomb of rock-icon Jim

Morrison. Alternatively, shop for souvenirs to bring home, climb to the top of the Arc de Triomphe, or

sit by the water fountain in the Tuileries gardens.

Overnight in Paris

Day 14 Friday, August 12, 2011

Guided excursion to Versailles

Step back into le grand siècle as you experience the opulence of Versailles, the elaborate palace of Louis

XIV. Built to be the envy of all Europe, France’s most extravagant château continually threatened to

bankrupt the national treasury. Here the Sun King held court in the most lavish style imaginable. At one

point, 1,000 nobles were attended by 4,000 servants inside the palace, while 15,000 soldiers and servants

inhabited the annexes. Stroll through the elegantly landscaped gardens, designed by André Le Nôtre.

You’ll also tour the State Apartments of the King himself and walk through the historic Hall of

Mirrors, where France, Spain and England officially recognized the independence of the United States in

1783, and where the Treaty of Versailles, which ended WWI, was signed. You’ll also witness the ornate

decor of the Queen’s State Apartments, furnished for Marie Antoinette. Because of the extreme

popularity of Versailles, guided visits of the interior cannot be guaranteed during peak seasons. In

this case, your group will hear a presentation from your guide before entering the palace.

Seine river cruise

This evening, take a narrated river cruise along the Seine. As your boat glides from one graceful bridge

to the next, sit back and gaze at the illuminated landmarks of Paris as they pan into view.

Overnight in Paris    Dinner is included tonight.
